A Tale of Whales
About five years ago, I began having a recurring dream about whales. I was living in Mexico City and found myself saddened and overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of life in the city. The dream was constant and sometimes imagining the whale from afar would lull me into a quiet and restful sleep. Other times, the whale seemed too close and loomed over me with its great size. It could be frightening. I decided to sculpt the whale of my dreams in clay. I felt that I needed to transform it into something real. I still haven't uncovered the meaning of this dream. Some people say that it means different things but for me, the recurrence is reassuring. Just like the real whales travel down to Mexico each year to great us, I've committed myself to visit them every year. Being in contact with them is one of the most fascinating moments that I've ever experienced. They seem to connect with you and the world around them and are always evolving and adapting. Whales are such mythical beings and so kind. Sometimes I think I would rather be a whale than a human.
After all of these years, whales has come to signify evolution to me. They appear in my dreams as a sign that I am ready to move on; to grow.
